How to make your hair grow faster: tips for hair health

Some of us struggle to maintain healthy hair for multiple reasons. We bleach it, we use too much heat, we wear it too tightly, there are lots of reasons that contribute to why our hair mightn’t be growing at our desired pace.

So, what can you do to encourage hair growth?

Stop washing your hair everyday

Washing your hair does encourage hair growth but washing it too much can cause damage. Shampoo can be very drying, so washing your hair daily is less beneficial than you may think! Shampooing daily will remove all the oil from your hair and can dry out your scalp, leaving the appearance of dull hair. The most you should be washing your hair is every second day, to encourage faster growth it’s better to wash it every 3-5 days, or even once a week

Deep conditioning

If you’re washing your hair, your next step is to condition it. Deep conditioning is a little bit different. Deep conditioning involves a very thick conditioner that is to be left in for 3-5 minutes rather than lathering and rinsing immediately. The difference is that deep conditioners are more concentrated and contain restorative ingredients that moisturises the hair, encouraging strength and shine.

Frequent trimming

As disheartening as it can be to lose inches off your hair, trimming your ends is very beneficial for hair growth. Aim to trim the ends of your hair every couple of months, it removes and prevents split ends, it gives the appearance of thicker, healthier hair, and prevents knots.

Styling

We all love styling our hair, putting it in ponytails, buns, plaits and more, but tying your hair too tightly can weaken the hair, increasing the likelihood of split ends.

What to avoid

If you’ve noticed hair damage or are trying to prevent it, don’t style your hair like this too frequently

  • High ponytails
  • Tight buns
  • Tight braids
  • Sew-in wigs
  • Clip-in/glue-in extensions

Sleeping habits

Just like your diet, an inadequate sleep schedule can contribute to slowing the rate of hair growth and weaken the hair. If you are not getting a sufficient 7-9 hours a night, then your hair may suffer. Sleeping is your body’s way of recovering after it’s been working hard through the day. If your body is unable to repair itself properly, then hair health could be negatively impacted.
