In the third century AD, marriage was banned by Emperor Claudius II as he believed that men who were married made bad soldiers as they would not want to leave their partners behind. Valentine did not agree and so he would marry people in secret. Valentine was soon found out and Claudius threw him into jail. There while awaiting his execution, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and before he was executed on February 14th, he sent a love letter to her and signed it from your valentine. Valentine gave his life and so others could marry and be bonded together. This tail is legendary in Rome and after many centuries, he was given sainthood and the day became a celebration.
